What’s the ONE secret that controls a champion’s mind?

Posted In Basic Mental Tips, Mindset | No comments

Have you ever asked yourself what controls what you do on the court? What makes you go after a ball you think you can’t get, beat an opponent you’ve never beaten before, or simply believe you have the capability to play at a higher level? Knowing what this controlling factor is will make you win a lot more matches on the tennis court. When you know what controls your actions and how to change it, you can then break through almost any challenge on or off the court. This controlling factor is called your beliefs. This article will discuss your beliefs as a controlling factor. Everybody has a set of beliefs that either allow them to play their best tennis or sabotage their efforts. So the first two questions you should be asking are, “What are beliefs?” and, “How did I get my beliefs?” A belief is an idea you have in your mind about something you accept as truth or reality. This doesn’t mean the idea is true or real; that’s just your opinion of the situation. So, for example, if you believe that you can’t hit a second serve, then the idea stops you from thinking and acting in a matter that would allow you to hit your serve correctly. Having a poor belief can literately cut off the possibility of you doing something you are capable of doing. Likewise, having a good belief can grant you the possibility of doing something you thought was impossible. So where do our beliefs come from? Our beliefs can come from our experiences growing up, our parents, school, or from just watching TV. Because our beliefs can come from anywhere, it is crucial that we are wary of who we listen to, the things we watch, and the messages they could be trying to convey to us. Knowing your limiting beliefs can be a huge help when trying to figure out why your tennis game isn’t improving or why you are struggling with a particular part of your game. Take about five minutes to write down all of the limiting beliefs you have about your tennis game. One of the best things you can do for your game is realize that if something is done by others then it can most likely be done by you with the right amount of effort and the right mindset. The first step to creating the right mindset (many beliefs that work together) is to find out what your current mindset is and work on changing it for the better. The moment you find a limiting belief, remember this is just an idea you have in your head and you can create a better one to replace the limiting one. Most ideas are made up and don’t have a lot of truth behind them if you question them enough anyway. So, I dare you to come up with better beliefs about the tennis player you really want to be.
